Legendary designer Marc Jacobs was born in New York City in 1954. Marc Jacobs is a graduate of the Parsons school of design and began his career for Ruben Thomas incorporated in 1984. Between the years 1986 and 1988 Marc Jacobs managed his own firm and was shortly thereafter named president of Perry Ellis womenswear, and continued on to expand his own label.
Marc Jacobs’ first designer collection was featured by Charivari, a clothing store in New York where Jacobs worked as a stock boy. His first line was a series of hand knit sweater’s that eventually earned him the Golden Thimble Award. In 1985 Marc Jacobs designed a line of clothing that was inspirationally based on the film Amadeus. After that time he began designing his own fashion label in the year 1986. The backing for his fashion label came from Jack Atkins.
In 1988, Marc Jacobs was named president of womenswear at the renowned Perry Ellis. While there, it became very clear that the young Marc Jacobs was a design prodigy. At the ripe old age of 26, Marc Jacobs was viewed as the premier designer for the parallel is company. Marc Jacobs was able to expand on the fundamental design principles of Perry Ellis before him without mimicking the earlier designs. This ability gave Perry Ellis/Marc Jacobs designed a fresh and unique look that did not stray too far from Perry Ellis tradition.
Trends in Marc Jacobs clothing, include his unique use of colors such as Tom, rest, camel, pumpkin, and ochre. Marc Jacobs is also popular for his use of layering dramatic factions over simpler looks for example. In 1991, the fall showing the Marc Jacobs clothing, premiered a great color princess coat layered over a standard brown cardigan. He’s also well known for complementary color matches revealed in his display of the tangerine car code over a butterscotch colored sweater with color graphic trousers.
To go along with his use of rich deep color, Marc Jacobs is also well-known for his use of rich deep fabrics. Marc Jacobs trademarked fabrics have become staples, sophisticated design and include angora, mohair, camel, cashmere, and wool. All of these fabrics are considered sumptuous and soft and are highly sought after by not only the average American female, but also those individuals who were part of high in social circles. Marc Jacobs use of these fabrics and colors stay true to the Perry Ellis tradition, but also offer consumers a new twist on elegant fashion.
Jacobs designs are considered refreshing because he sticks to the basics and continues to design closing that, while fashionable and high-end, can still be worn by the everyday woman. Most recently, Marc Jacobs designed every new the luxury of the standard stripe and even puts a new twist on clothing design having been inspired by the American flag. Jacobs is currently also continuing the trend of the fitted coat, providing woman a structured garment with an attractive shape.
The most recent Marc Jacobs line includes additional luxurious fabrics including mink in Cashmere as well some innovative and flattering cuts in the form of the bell skirt, empire waist, propped sleeves, and fitted jackets. He has also extended its fabric line to include silk, denim, sealskin, and jersey. At the seasons past, Marc Jacobs designs continue to be fashion staples and will forever mark the baseline for all classic female clothing.
