Vera Wang was born on June 27, 1949 to an affluent family. Vera attended the Capin School and also spent time at the Sorbonne of Paris, France. Vera obtained her history degree from Sarah Lawrence College, but strayed from her choice of degree when she became increasingly interested in fashion after attending many fashion shows with her mother. One interesting fact about Vera is that she once trained as a figure skater and actully competed in the US Figure Skating Championships in 1968. It was not until she failed to make the Olympic figure skating team that she elected to enter the fashion industry.
Vera spent well over a decade of her life as the fashion editor for the popular magazine Vogue. She left Vogue in 1985 after failing to secure a position as editor in chief. Five years later, Vera opened her own fashion house in New York. This salon featured Vera’s collection of bridal gowns, which became vastly popular in a very short period of time. And while Vera is most well known for her proclivity toward designing wedding gowns, she also lends her expertise toward designing ensembles for famous figure skaters. Most notably, Vera has designed for both Michelle Kwan and Nancy Kerrigan.
The popularity of Vera’s wedding gowns is unprecedented. She’s designed wedding gowns for most of Hollywood’s elite, including Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham, Mariah Carey, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Simpson, Uma Thurmond, Holly Hunter, and the list goes on and on.
The Wang name name has become so well known that she has been able to expand her line to include a wide variety of eyewear, jewelry, shoes, and fragrances. She has also written a book and made many cameo appearances in different Hollywood films. Most recently, Vera has opened and produced her own line of housewares. Underlying china and crystal collection has repeatedly appeared among the top 10 best-selling patterns list for bridal registries in the United States. She has also just landed on them with her line of Serta mattresses.
To add to her celebrity power, she served as a guest judge during the third season of Project Runway, a popular television reality show. And she also made an appearance on another popular reality show, The Apprentice.
The popular department store Kohl’s announced in 2006 that it would begin carrying a Vera Wang clothing, footwear, accessories, and linens line. She also continues to retail excess with selected boutiques located in four different locations in the United States. Vera Wang is currently living with her husband and two children, and although her numerous successes continue to grow she remains continually down to earth, easy to work with, and a joy to be around — as quoted by her many colleagues and peers. With the increasing sales and a mattress and housewares lines it will be very interesting to see where Vera Wang goes from here.
