I happen to love Bento boxes. It’s everything my heart desires when I go to a Japanese/Sushi restaurant. A little bit of terriyaki, a little salad, a little edamame, a little tempura, and a little sushi. I get all my tastes, flavors, and full Japanese eating experience from the Bento.
Well, how about a video game-themed Bento Box? Super Mario Bros, Kirby, or Yoshi’s Island Bento? That’s right! On anna the red’s blog she does an incredible job of creating these Bento Boxes from scratch with all these different video game characters. She also gives a detailed how-to with pictures so you can create your own Bento box. I think it’s a great food ‘arts & crafts’ thing to do with children, especially if you want to open them up to different cultures. My personal favorite is the Kirby and Mario mushrooms, absolutely adorable! The most elaborate Bento is the Katamari Damacy. An incredible amount of time and detail was put into creating it.

Anna originates from Japan. She moved to the US in 1994 and went to art school. She loves creating things with her hands, as well as loves cooking, sewing, and drawing. Her love of creating these Bento boxes comes from the Japanese tradition of Moms waking up early and making Bento boxes for their children and husbands. Many create what they call “Kyaraben” (Japanese character) Bento boxes. Anna has certainly taken making Bento boxes to a whole new level.
