Traveling can be fun but it can also be a real headache if you get caught spending more than you had intended to. Make sure you get to where you’re going with both your sanity and your wallet intact by following these rules for avoiding unexpected travel expenses:
If you’re driving:
- Be sure to gas up at your usual station, before you get on the highway or interstate where gas stations typically charge more.
- Pack food for the road. Rest-stop and fast food joint costs can really add up, not to mention they’re notoriously unhealthy.
- If you’re renting a car be sure to return it on time. Many companies will charge you for another full day, even if you’re only an hour late with your return.
If you’re flying:
- Know the airline fees for checked baggage (usually $15-$25), or fit everything into your carry-on if possible.
- Opt for long-term parking. Short-term parking, although more convenient, usually costs about twice as much.
- Consider using an alternate airport – driving an extra 30 minutes to a smaller airport might save you money in the form of a ticket that’s cheap enough to offset the extra gas and time it takes to get there.
If you’re staying in a hotel:
- Check out on time. Some hotels charge a convenience fee for additional hours used on checkout day.
- Don’t assume that anything, like internet service or bottled water, is included with the room. Check policies carefully so you don’t have unexpected charges on your final bill.
- Consider staying at a bed and breakfast instead of a hotel – not only do they provide breakfast and (usually) an afternoon snack or tea, but they rarely charge for extras like wireless internet.
