Avoid the Gym: Get a Home Treadmill

By Heather Steel on January 5th, 2009

In today’s economy, it’s tough for even the biggest workout fanatic to justify a monthly gym membership, much less one of the personal training packages or private pilates sessions that most gyms are aggressively pitching.  Fortunately, working out at home is easier than ever with the growing availability of low-cost home fitness equipment.  Exercise balls, resistance bands, and free weights are making their way into American homes at unprecidented rates as more and more Americans are moving their workouts to the home front.

Cardio can be a bit tougher, especially for apartment-dwellers, but many fitness companies are coming up with solutions to this issue.  Companies such as NordicTrack (which many of you may remember from the unwieldy machines your parents used back in the eighties), Spirit, and Proform have developed user-friendly and economical treadmills for home use.  One of the easiest and most affordable options is the folding treadmill, which comes in several brands and models.  Once you finish your workout, you can fold this treadmill up and slide it under your bed or into your closet.  Another affordable option is a manual treadmill, which moves as you walk on it rather than setting a pace for you electronically.  If you are in the market for a treadmill for your home, make sure you read the reviews and ratings online before making a purchase, although many treadmills come with financing plans and 30-day guarantees.
