2009 Golden Globe Awards Commentary

Sometimes watching an awards show is just as much for the commentary and observations you’ll read later as it is for finding out who the Hollywood winners are that year. Here’s the Twirlit commentary for the 2009 Golden Globe Awards.

Observations:

Laura Dern forgot where she was (an awards show) and turned her acceptance speech into an election speech.

Rumer Willis is starting to look more and more like her famous mom. Demi mouths, “Hi, Baby!” as Ashton blows her a kiss while Rumer is onstage as Miss Golden Globe.

Sting with dark hair and beard: different, but still sexy as all get-out.

Johnny Depp keeps scratching his head and is completely, ironically dead-pan as a the presenter for best actress in a musical or comedy. He couldn’t be more droll if he were dead.

Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange giggling like schoolgirls when they both say “Good evening” at the same time – the hairspray must’ve gone to their heads.

Running Joke

Shh!

He Said

Simon Beaufoy is quite British: “Thank you very much, indeed.”

Alec Baldwin joking about bringing Rumer Willis juiceboxes on movie sets (no laughter); tribute to daughter Ireland, who makes him laugh at home.

Colin Farrell commented that the counting for his award must have been done in Florida.

Sacha Baron Cohen notes that story of faces getting younger as a person gets older is much like most of the people in the room.

Mickey Rourke gets the first bleep of the night, mentions balls, and something about a man and his dogs… I think he was drunk or stoned or both… Hair in his face and shades on, almost fell over walking up to the stage. Scary stuff, that.

Danny Boyle gets bleeped when they tell him they’re wrapping up over him.

She Said

Sally Hawkins very touched to win; cute interaction with Emma Thompson. She tells Emma, “I love you.” Emma half-asks and half-affirms, “You’re ok.”

Demi telling Rumer she’s proud of her and not to slouch.

Tina Fey‘s response to winning the best comedy actress award: “Good gravy!”

Emma Thompson offers a hefty discount for hiring her and Dustin Hoffman together, but Dustin interrupts with, “No, no, no…”

Kate Winslet wins second best actress award and forgets who all of her rivals are. “Oh God, who’s the other one? Angelina!” She just keeps saying, “Thank you so much,” then reads, “Please wrap up.” She responds with “You have no idea how much I am not wrapping up!” She says, “Working with you made me love you more” to her husband and, “I’ve loved you for 13 years” to Leo DiCaprio.

Cecille B. DeMille Award

Could Martin Scorsese‘s glasses be any bigger???

Tribute montage to Steven Speilberg is awesome.

Steven says Martin is his inspiration. One of his first movies was CB DeMille’s Greatest Show on Earth in Philadelphia in 1952. He tried to recreate the train wreck with his model trains until his father threatened to take them away. Steven filmed the last one and says he felt the same thrill he felt when he watched the one in the movie. His philosophy since then as been that he won’t make a movie unless he thinks to himself, “Will I get away with this?”

All in all, it was a night of fun, with a few jabs thrown in for good old Hollywood charm.
