Diets and I have never been friendly. Atkins: No bread? No way! My favorite food IS carbs. The Zone: Sure, it worked for Jennifer Aniston, but getting three prepared meals delivered to your door everyday sounds extreme, as well as expensive. Master Cleanse: No solid foods? “Lemonade” with maple syrup and cayenne pepper is not what I’d make if life gave me lemons. No more extreme diets please! How about a diet where I can eat a full-fat chocolate ice cream sundae with a drizzle of brandy once in awhile? According to Esther Blum, the author of “Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous,” I can!

Blum is a New York-based holistic nutritionist and possibly my new BFF. I came across her guilt-free diet in a Daily Mail article from across the pond. Her realistic approach doesn’t set you up for failure like most overly-restrictive plans. She says food is not the enemy. We need food. It’s okay (and even good!) to eat typical diet-busters like butter, chocolate, cheese and even alcohol! All in moderation; you don’t have to give up your favorite eats.

In a chapter titled “Feel Like Buttah? Have Some Buttah!” she writes that saturated fats ‘support bones, protect the liver from toxins, enhance the immune system, protect the heart muscle and absorb omega-3s.’ I can’t believe it’s butter!

To discover the health benefits of other yummy goodies like chocolate and cheese, and why full-fat foods are better than fat-free options, pick up a copy of “Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous” at the library or at Chronicle Books.
