Is the Recession Affecting the Beauty Industry?

I was in shock after reading a post on Beautysnob.com about the Serge Lutens $75 cream eyeliner. Yup, that’s right! $75 for an eyeliner. What could possibly be in that eyeliner that it would cost $75? I went to Barneys.com to take a look at the rest of the line and continued to be in shock. $160 for blush! $65 for nail polish!

So, it got me thinking. Is this Recession affecting the Beauty industry?

In certain cities where a small percentage of the population can go shopping at Barneys and Saks fifth Avenue, like Los Angeles or New York, live in a bubble. I live in Los Angeles and everywhere you look there is a Bentley or Maserati and of course all the celebrities that live there. Those people may be able to afford a $75 eyeliner, but certainly not the majority. And with that, I would have to say the recession is affecting the beauty and cosmetics industry, because it’s about the majority spending money, not the well-off minority.

In every industry, there have been or will be cuts. People losing their jobs, companies cutting back on their marketing budgets, etc. I know women will not stop wearing lipstick or mascara. However, if your choice is $12 for a Sephora brand lipstick, or $4.49 for Maybelline mascara, as opposed to $$55 for Serge Lutens lipstick and $60 for their mascara, I think you would buy the former.

  1. I’ve turned to online deal hunting when it comes to beauty. I found a brand called Coono Babe that is very inexpensive and the products are almost identical to my former name brand favorites. Their Happy Ending finishing powder is exactly like Bobbi Brown’s powder – but costs over $20 less. An added bonus- they offer free shipping on all orders. Check them out :) .

  2. If you are willing to buy a house, you will have to get the loans. Moreover, my father all the time utilizes a car loan, which occurs to be really useful.
