Michelle Obama Brings a New Sense of Style to the White House

By on January 28th, 2009

This First Lady is probably the first woman who matches effortless style, elegance, with the kind of presence that would still allow you to feel comfortable with her, if you bumped into her at Starbucks.  She can sport a J. Crew dress with the same ease as if she were wearing a Narcisco Rodriguez flowing gown at a White House event.

I’d describe her style as put together, modern, and chic.  Most importantly, she knows what looks good her body type and isn’t afraid to show it.  A favorite of mine was her yellow J.crew cardigan, top, and skirt that she wore on the Jay Leno Show, as well as how she freely lets everyone know that she enjoys shopping at H&M.  She’s definitely one of us girls who can see an extremely expensive dress on the runway, and then rush to H&M and try to replicate it, at a much
lower price point.

As our country responds to the greatest Financial crisis since the Great Depression, we also need style icons to look up to, that can still combine timeless fashion with a common sense that had easily disappeared alongside the dresses that cost thousands of dollars.  But don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t expect her to sport J.Crew jeans at White House events, for which she now has famous world renowned designers, sending her their best pieces, hoping she’ll wear them.

But the thing is… she could.  And not only would she get away with it, she’d rock it out.  Because you can’t buy style, it’s something you’re born with and then learn to own.
