Fashion Week Moves on Up

Fashion Week. Stick-thin models. Anna Wintour.  Fabulosity and frivolous comments.   Yes, It’s New York Fashion Week.  But starting in September 2010, instead of its Bryant Park location, New York’s Fashion Week will be moving to Lincoln Center.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and IMG Fashion announced on Tuesday that they had settled on the new location after two years of searching. Bryant Park’s large tents and media frenzy have been a fixture for Fashion week since 1993, and designers such as Nanette Lepore, known for her ethereal and girlish designs, were saddened to hear the news.  The Mayor said that the administration worked to find a new location because of the fear that Fashion week would move to Los Angeles, being a blow to the New York economy.

Last  year, Fashion week generated $466 million in visitor spending, which are dollars that New York City officials and those benefiting from those fashionista dollars do not want to lose.  But what future fashionistas will gather from the new location is a lot more space, about 87,000 sq feet to Bryant Park’s 70,000 sq feet.
That’s a lot of sass to add to any locale.
