What do the White Ribbons at the Oscars Mean?

In the past, celebrities have walked down the red carpet wearing a colored ribbon to help bring awareness to a cause they support.  Red ribbons are for HIV/AIDS Awareness, pink ribbons are for Breast Cancer Awareness and yellow ribbons were in support for Lance Armstrong’s Live Strong.  This year there will be a new ribbon on the red carpet at the Oscars, the white ribbon.

The white ribbon will actually be tied in a knot, to show support for marriage equality.  The white knot was created in response to the protests from Prop 8 that was passed banning gay marriage.  It represents two symbols of marriage, white and “tying the knot”. It was created as a peaceful way to show your support that “everyone should have the right to tie the knot”.

Keep your eyes open as celebrities walk down the red carpet to see if they are a supporter.  A few celebrities have already been seen wearing the white knot, including Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters at the MusiCares benefit and Dave Stewart at the Grammys.  If you would like to join the celebrities and wear your own white knot, you can get your own at WhiteKnot.org.
