Howard K. Stern, attorney, hanger-on and rumored boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith was arrested yesterday on eight felonies, including conspiring to furnish controlled substances, unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance and obtaining fraudulent prescriptions. He was release on $20,000 bail.
Dr. Sandeep Kapoor was also arrested and charged with obtaining a prescription for opiates by “fraud, deceit or misrepresentation” and one count of obtaining a prescription for opiates by giving a false name or address. Dr. Khristine Eroshevich was also charged and is due to turn herself in on Monday.
Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental overdose of prescription medication in February, 2007 while living in the Bahamas. At the time, several bottles of prescription medications were found in her home under her name, as well as Stern’s. Tests performed after her death found 3 anti-depressants, human growth hormone, a sleep medication and over the counter medication.
Sadly, Smith’s 20 year old son Daniel died a few months before his mother, and days after the birth of his sister, Danielynn. His cause of death was also an accidental overdose of prescription medications.
Stern was a fixture by Anna’s side for many years, representing her in contesting her 89 year old husband’s will, and even claiming to be the father of Danielynn. Eventually, that was proved false when a paternity test revealed that Anna’s ex-lover, Larry Birkhead was actually Danielynn’s father.
Stern says he did nothing illegal in regards to obtaining prescription medication for Anna Nicole.
