How to Make It in Hollywood

Celebrities are big business because everybody dreams of being beautiful, famous, and rich. Hollywood is full of hopefuls with high aspirations, some with real potential and some not so much. And, although making it big is largely up to you (success usually being a byproduct of dogged determination and a solid dose of talent) the first step is getting into “the biz” in the first place… and that we can help you with.

Work in the Mailroom

It might sound like a flunky job, but surprisingly some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters got their start working in the mailroom of a major talent agency.

Write a Spec Script

Spec scripts (also called “sample scripts”) work like virtual resumes, and if you’re lucky will catch the attention of a producer or director and earn you a spot in the writer’s room. The most common way to start is to pick a favorite TV show and try your hand at writing an episode.

Become a Script Reader

One of the best ways for writers to break into Hollywood is to get a job reading scripts at a studio or production company. Script Readers do need some experience, but if you can get in you’ll get invaluable experience in both how and what to write.

Go to Film School

Besides the obvious knowledge you’ll gain, one of the more priceless benefits of going to a prestigious film school is getting to know others who have aspirations similar to yours — it may pay to know them in the future.

Get a PA Gig

Production Assistants do a variety of tasks, some not so glamorous, but they also get a valuable education in filmmaking and get to know people who make big decisions.

Be an Assistant

Assistants might spend a lot of time kissing the asses of their stuck up bosses, but they also make valuable connections and get a true insider’s view of how the business works.

Work at a Casting Agency

If you dream of acting then learn the ropes and network with industry experts by getting a job, any job, at a casting agency.

Call Around

Pick up the phone and inquire about job opportunities at every potential employer in Hollywood, and keep calling and asking until you land somewhere. Try starting with the Hollywood Creative Directory.

Promote Yourself Online

The internet makes for a great opportunity to showcase your skills to an unlimited audience for little to no cost.

  1. no easy way to the top – other than starting at the bottom and working your way up. still good advise.

  2. You have a lot of great tips. One thing I might add is the strength to be able to live in Los Angeles. The daily grind is handful itself and one thing you must be out here is strong minded and patient.
