Yup, that’s what the people at New Line Cinema are saying.
“MacGyver” was a science-oriented, action packed TV series that ran on ABC from 1985 – 92. The show’s star, Richard Dean Anderson, was the secret agent working for the Phoenix Foundation that escaped dangerous situations using lightening-quick engineering mastery.
“We think we’re a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise,” said New Line’s Richard Brener. I think it’s going to take more than that. They have yet to attach a writer to the film. Not to mention, the audience that watched Macgyver back then has, well, grown up. It’s true that SNL has given the character new life with Will Forte’s MacGruber spoofs, however I don’t think that will transfer over to the feature film. It’s possible that the James Bond film series that has been around since the 60s is a good basis for New Line to pay attention to. Each new generation flocks to the theaters to watch the next James Bond installment. Will they get the same effect for MacGyver? It will be interesting to see.

while i know a few people who regularly watch the now syndicated program, i got to agree -- who's the audience for this? i mean, it's one thing to laugh at the SNL parodies, but it's quite another to actually sit and watch a non-satire full length movie. i guess we'll see
