MTV’s The City and Eating Disorders

Most of all watch MTV’s “The City,” for the fashion, the wooden “reality celebs,” or just to catch another glance at Whitey Port’s man of the moment, rocker frontman, Jay.  A particular favorite is the claw-ready Olivia, an uptown socialite who also works with Whitney at the offices of famed designer, Diane Von Furstenberg,” along Allie, the lithe model who is the subject of a recent episode about eating disorders.

Kelly Cutron, Whitney’s former boss and owner of People’s Revolution, a fashion PR firm, makes a guest appearance and takes time to question Allie about a possible eating disorder.  As this New York Magazine blog post states, “The City,” cannot handle the topic of eating disorders.”

How very true.  MTV had a chance to talk about the rampant nature of eating disorders in the world of high fashion, and instead the episode seemed a bit hollow. Whitney was mum about the incident, and it became a chance to demonize Kelly Cutrone, when she was just bringing up a relevant topic.

The truth is, fashion is a business about looks and how well clothing fits on models.  You can’t really expect everything to change, but this particular episode of “The City,” could’ve at least done a good job of sending a message to young women across the country.  But they didn’t.

  2. Joanna Poppink, MFT says:

I wonder what producers hope to accomplish by using a shalllow sound bite approach to bring eating disorders into programming. Do they hope to capture the “eating disorder audience” ?

    Good grief.

I believe viewers, even when out for light fun entertainment are sensitive and discerning human beings.
