I have never had a problem with people having certain cosmetic surgery done to improve their looks and possibly their self-esteem. I think many people take it way too far and they end up looking like aliens. However, I do think that over time some of these procedures like Botox or Collagen may have an effect that goes beyond cosmetic.
Well, according to a study done in Holland this may be true for Botox. Dr. Judith Grub, who led the research for this particular study, found that because Botox suppresses the lines on one’s face it can essentially suppress one’s emotions. She said it’s true that people suppress negative emotions everyday, ”however, my research shows that paralysing muscles that help you to express emotion leads to internalising these feelings.”
Dr. Patrick Bowler, a British cosmetic treatment expert says that Botox does not paralyse the face and thus should still allow people to make facial expressions.
I think all these cosmetic procedures, even though they have become mainstream, could use more research done to understand what they may or may not do to a person. I do believe that products like Restylane, that is supposedly made from Hyaluronic Acid which is something that naturally exists in our bodies, may not be as harmful, but who knows.
Have you had any cosmetic procedure done or would you and why?

Hi Robyn, I both administer and receive both botox and filler treatments. A lot of research has already been done to understand what cosmetic treatments do to people both physically and psychologically. Dr. Grob's press release is garnering a lot of attention because she linked her research to a hot topic, botox, but she didn't specifically study the effects of botox on people's feelings. Good botox does not stop the individual from making facial expressions so in that sense, botox is irrelevant to Dr. Grob's research findings. Botox does reduce feelings of anger, depression and stress. Most people who use botox like the way it makes them feel. My strongest recommendation with cosmetic treatments is to stick to non-permanent treatments like botox and hyaluronic acid fillers. Permanent fillers, muscle relaxants and surgery might seem more economical but what suits your face now likely will not look good in 10 years and will be very difficult to reverse.
