My first experience with Acai occurred at a small juice/smoothie bar in the East Village of New York City when I was looking at the huge menu of smoothie options. They had all these exciting names with loads of healthy-sounding ingredients and the person behind the counter said to me, “Why don’t you try Acai? It’s the most powerful superfood in the world.”  Wow.  That’s a great selling point.  Anyway, I gave in and tried the Acai smoothie and it tasted like a mix between dark chocolate and berries.  And I definitely felt energized after a few sips of the smoothie concoction.

So what exactly is the stuff?  Acai is one of the most powerful Superfoods in the world, but it hasn’t really reached mainstream popularity in the United States.  Its a fruit that is a native to Central and South America and is rich in anthocyanins, antixodiants, and flavanoids.  As you might know, antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals that cause early aging, so the more foods with antioxidants you eat, the better chances you have at looking your best, for longer.

As for Acai, just like other dark-colored berrries like blueberries or blackberries, is loaded with antioxidants, but unlike the other berries, acai is a source of both omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids.  It is consumed on a regular basis in South America for breakfast alongside granola, and is also known for its quick energy boost.

So, if you’re looking for a new Superfood to add into your diet, try out the Acai berry.  You might be surprised how much you enjoy the flavor. Plus, it’s good for you.
