Vera Wang’s Lavender Hit by Recession

Vera Wang, the designer who became world renowned for her elegant take on wedding dresses, has also expanded her fashion empire with reaches into the world of retail as well as her exclusive Lavender Collection which featured more contemporary looks and prices that ranged from $200-$800.

Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue have dropped the Lavender line from their stores and Neiman Marcus has reduced the number of stores that will be carrying the line.  All this is due to the the fact that the clothing hasn’t been selling as of late.  In these Recessionary times, retail sales have taken the hardest hit and high fashion is one of the victims of consumers closing up their purses and looking in their closets instead of spending time in stores and boutiques.

Wang started off her career in the editorial side as the youngest Fashion Editor of Vogue Magazine at age 23, but decided that she wanted to focus on design.  She left, and soonafter, she moved on to design accessories for Ralph Lauren.  And that’s when everything changed.  Wang fell in love and was looking for the right wedding dress when she couldn’t find anything that suited her.  She ended up getting the gown made, and decided that she would create the wedding dresses that she wished that she had.

And the rest is history.  Vera Wang became and is still a top brand in the world of wedding gowns, and Wang moved on to accessories, fragrances, and of course, the Lavender collection.

Though this may serve as an obstacle for Wang, there is no doubt in my mind that she will re-assess the line and come back full-force in the near future. She is Vera Wang, after all.
