A Hollywood Escape

What’s the one place where you can go to escape reality, be in the dark, and still have the comfort of being around other human beings?  Yup, that’s right. It’s the movie theater.

The Great Depression of the 1930′s was actually when Hollywood grew, as moviegoers were looking for a place to forget their worries, problems, and probably hungry bellies.  Such films included musicals, slapstick and screwball comedies such as “A Night at the Opera,” and “Top Hat.”

Our current recession is no different as comedies such as “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” and “Made Goes to Jail,” are raking in box office bucks like its nobody’s business.

“When the economy gets a little bit sluggish, our business seems to do well or even pick up,” sayd Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros.

Ticket sales this year up 17.5 percent, to $1.7 billion, according to Media by Numbers, a box-office tracking company and attendance is up by 16%, making this year one of the most successful for Hollywood so far.

It is definitely the lighter fare and action pics that are looking to do high numbers in the coming months, and with “The Watchmen,” and “Monsters vs. Aliens,”, Hollywood is doing just fine.

Unfortunately for everyone else, only time will tell.
