Reuters reports that on Thursday night, a tornado ripped through the small town of Mena, Arkansas, killing three people and injuring two dozen more people.
The storm tore through the small town after 8 PM CST, which has a population of 5,600, is located in Polk county, and is 130 miles away from Little Rock, Arkansas. The town of Mena was established in 1896 as a midway point between Fort Smith and Texarkana, and was a frontier town from the beginning.
Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe dispatched 30 National Guardsmen to Mena to help local officials provide security to the affected residents. He also declared Howard, Polk and Sevier Counties state disaster areas due to damage caused by last night’s severe storms. Additional declarations may follow as damage assessments continue in affected counties. Governor Beebe also plans to tour the affected areas by air and then by land throughout the day today.
Tommy Jackson, a spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management at North Little Rock, Arkansas said that “there was extensive damage to the Polk County courthouse and municipal buildings, as well as the downtown business area.”
The Governor’s office also provided information to help those that may have been displaced or affected by the Tornado.
