Furor Over Michelle Obama’s Lack of Snobby Dressing

Michelle Obama

First Lady Michelle Obama is definitely one of a kind.  We’re definitely not using to seeing a First Lady who wears clothing that you can buy from your local mall or a First Lady that hugs the Queen of England. (Just so you know, this is considered bad etiquette)

She wears lesser known designers such as Isabel Toledo and Jason Wu instead of Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang.  Oh and she also sports J.Crew cardigans and wears Talbots dresses for Magazine covers.  How awful, right?  Well, the Huffington Post writes about the designers that are dissing Michelle Obama as famed designer Oscar de la Renta says, “You don’t go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater.”

Well, why not?  Let’s face it, we’re in the worst recession since the 1982, unemployment numbers are skyrocketing, and layoffs are the norm.  I actually think that seeing our First Lady wearing moderately priced clothing shows that she is consious of the pain that most Americans are facing today.

Granted I do understand that fashion is a multibillion dollar business, but times have changed.  People are cutting back on spending, and all shows of excess are in poor taste from TV shows to magazines.  I’m reminded of a quote that is attributed to Marie Antoinette as the French Revolution and the French economic crisis loomed.  “Let them Eat Cake.”

At least Michelle Obama wouldn’t say that.

  1. I don’t understand what the big deal is. She looks beautiful regardless of the threads she wears.

  2. If anything, this makes me think of the first lady in a more positive light.

  3. why is everything on here about michele obama about how she is absolutely amazing and without any flaw? b/c she wears what peoople tell her to? oooohh way to go, michele!! it’s as if everything you can possibly find on her is absolutely amazing!! ……how about the video when she says how unproud she is of America except for her husband?

  4. Hey Cindy, I think its just because there hasn’t been a First Lady like her before. But you know, we obviously all have our own opinions, so feel free to express yours.
