Those ubiquitous sweeteners are everywhere from Starbucks to your local Mom and Pop coffee shop. Pink is for Sweet N’ Low. Blue is For Equal.  Yellow if for Splenda. And what about Green?  Well, it’s for the newest sweetener to enter the crowded artificial sweetener market, and it’s called Stevia.

The New York Times reported on the emergence of Stevia as a newcomer to the $1.2 billion sweetener industry.  Stevia does have a chance to break through as it is a sweetener that is derived from plants, but the drawbacks are that its quite expensive and can have a licorice-like aftertaste.

Two of the biggest players in the Stevia market are Cargill and Whole Earth Sweetener company whose stevia products are named Truvia and PureVia.  These new stevia sweeteners are also in Sprite Green and Trop50.

Artificial sweeteners aren’t going anywhere but the health concerns from consuming too much of them have been documented in various case studies.  Even if Stevia is an all-natural product, would you mind its bitter aftertaste?

I’m reminded of words from my brother who thinks anything with artificial sweetener tastes “disgusting.”

“Yo, Kat, why don’t you use use real sugar?” No brainer.

With all these choices, maybe using a bit of the real thing isn’t so bad?
