On April 20, 1999, two teenagers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, unleashed their anger upon their classmates at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, before committing suicide.  12 students and one teacher were killed in the Columbine shootings and its effect on other members of the school and across the world, was one of solemn sorrow.

Ten years have passed since the Columbine Shootings and though the students and families of those affected, have moved forward, they have most definitely not forgotten these events.  On April 20, 2009, they planned a private memorial service for Monday night and a crowd of hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil by Sunday night.  Columbine High School was also closed for the day.

Governor Bill Ritter is scheduled to address the Legislature regarding a resolution called “Triumph over Tragedy,” marking the occurrence.  In remembrance of the victims, Columbine Memorial with an outer wall called the “Ring of Healing,” overlooks the school.  Inside is the Ring of Remambrance that has tablets dedicated to each of the 13 victimes and inscriptons by their families.

Oprah Winfrey planned to air an episode dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Columbine massacre, but pulled it after deciding that it focused too much on the gunmen and not on the victims.

  1. Wow, already ten years. I was young at the time, but it was so shocking. On that day I felt as hopeless and sad as I did three years later on 9/11. Very sad day.
