Movies and books such as “He’s Just Not That Into You,” tell women of all ages, shapes and sizes, that you shouldn’t throw yourself at men. If he’s not chasing after you in an obvious manner, it just means that he’s just not that interested in you. So don’t chase/throw yourselves at them.
Well, 28 year old performance artist Lilly McElroy decided to play with that rule when she became to literally throw herself at men and had her friend photograph her doing so. She’s been written up in Elle Magazine and her work is currently being featured at the Thomas Robertello Gallery in an exhibition called “Gravity Buffs,” which features work that “requires a suspension of disbelief to allow illogical readings of gravity to fully reveal conceptual content and narratives.”
On her website, lillymcelroy.com, she’s posted the online series entitled, “I Throw Myself at Men,” which takes a humorous look at gender stereotypes. With regards to the art that she creates, McElroy says, “In the end, I want to make the viewer laugh, but I want them to undersatnd that here is more at stake, that everyone is implicated, including me.”
McElroy is also a writer fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA. For more information, check out her website.
