Swine Flu Raised to Pandemic Level 5

Earlier today the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the pandemic level from Phase 4 to Phase 5 as the swine flu strain of influenza continued to spread. Margaret Chan, the Director-General of WHO explained that Phase 5 is “characterized by human-to-human spreading of the virus into at least two countries in one region.” That means that the influenza strain is now spreading from human contact. As of now there are 132 cases of swine flu and it’s been found in eleven countries.

Chan reassures that the world is better prepared for a pandemic than at any other point in history. Still, it’s worth taking a few precautions. First of all, good hygiene is especially important these days. That means washing your hands, covering your coughs and calling in sick if you are indeed feeling sick. Some are also recommending stocking up on necessities such as food, water, medical supplies and anything else you might need in the case of stores shutting down.

Nonetheless, at this point there have only been a few actual deaths and only one in the United States. Doctors are prepared and so long as you stay informed and alert, you should be fine.
