American Idol judge and former pop star Paula Abdul admitted to being addicted to painkillers during an interview with Ladies Home Journal. The 46 year-old Abdul said after 12 years of addiction, she is no longer dependent on pain medication. According to LHJ magazine “Paula wore a patch that delivered a pain medication about 80 times more potent than morphine and took a nerve medication to relieve her symptoms.”
Abdul admitted checking herself into rehab last thanksgiving and claimed it was one of the hardest things she’s ever done. “I could have killed myself…. Withdrawal — it’s the worst thing. I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain, it was excruciating.”
In an interview with ABC News a couple of weeks ago, Abdul denied the fact that she was addicted to prescription drugs. However, she admitted taking some after a horrid car crash and emergency plane landing.

Paula’s occasional odd behavior always struck me as similar to the behavior of many of the unfortunate victims of addiction that I’ve encountered entering prescription drug detox. It’s worried me for several years, and I’m pleased she had the courage to go through drug detox. Paula, we love ya! Good luck and stay strong!
