Gay Teen Sergio Garcia Voted Prom Queen of Fairfax High

Last Saturday night Fairfax High School, located in West Hollywood, CA, partook in the ageless end-of-the-year high school tradition better known as prom. And like most schools, the students came together to vote for their graduating class’s prom queen and prom king. Unlike most schools however, the prom queen ended up being a guy. A queen to be sure, but a guy all the same. His name? Sergio Garcia.

Eighteen-years-old and a graduating senior at Fairfax, Garcia is an openly gay male who wanted to take part in festivities of prom, but didn’t quite feel comfortable running for prom king. Rather he felt he’d do better as the queen. And by the looks of it his classmates agreed. On Saturday night, wearing a sharp-looking charcoal-gray tuxedo paired with a sleek black bow tie Garcia was officially named prom queen.

Garcia admits the idea started as a stunt, but that it quickly turned into a challenge and then it became serious. According to the LA Times, Garcia’s campaign resulted in a serious “dialogue about gender roles” on the Fairfax campus and inspired students and administrators throughout the school. Although there were some detractors to be sure.

Asked what he hoped to accomplish next, Garcia answered he wanted to either work as a choreographer or a hair stylist (maybe even both!).
