What is the one beauty product that you absolutely CANNOT/WILL NOT give up even when you’re trying to cut back on your expenses? (PERSONAL STORIES ARE A BONUS)
The winner will be posted next week! (week of June 8th, 2009) Good luck!

What is the one beauty product that you absolutely CANNOT/WILL NOT give up even when you’re trying to cut back on your expense?
Well, I have not given up my daily routine of washing with Neutrogena and moisturizing with Origins Nightamins or Avons Anew Clinical. I have been laid-off since January, so it’s important to take care of myself during tough times. If it’s a little face lotion that’s going to add more than just a smile to my face, I’ll make sure to use it!
When money is tight, I’ve been known to find reasonable replacements for the luxury items I love and sometimes they end up becoming permanent parts of my beauty regime (like Target brand facial cleanser – who knew?). But I always stick to two of my favorites – Clinique’s Take the Day Off (removes eye makeup so easily and never irritates my eyes, which many other brands do) and their Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel for the daytime.
No matter my financial situation, I can’t give up my Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. As long as you have a great base, you can use any kind of product on top of it (drugstore, luxury brand), and it will look picture perfect
As funny as it may seem; babywipes. Absolutley everywhere I’ve been they come in handy! Wash face, “shower” when camping, clean feet when at a long music festival, wash faces of the lil ones, wash dash of car while at carwash, throw pack at boyfriend when he’s being a punk, clean keyboard, put under car seat to deoderize, remove all eye makeup…and after a long hike I take them out of the cooler to wipedown and cooldown!! I’m telling you!! The best things ever!
I absolutely cannot live without my Clinique face wash…the set of three (soap, cleanser, and moisturizer). I used to take my Clinique face wash for granted. It was taking care of my skin so well for so long that I thought I had the perfect skin naturally. Well, I was in for a rude awakening when I switched to the cheapy grocery store brand to try to save some money. A couple weeks later I broke out all over my face and was so confused. I was crushed I didn’t have the perfect skin I thought I did. Within days I was back to my old stuff and I have never dreamed of switching ever since then. I love my Clinique!!!
Does Proactiv count as one item? It’s really a system so I can’t give up any part of it. I tried to give it up but acne came back. And believe me I tried other solutions, including Accutane. I also tried a supposedly less expensive version of the system with comparable items but it didn’t work and since they wanted me to use more of certain of the products the price ended up being very close anyway.
If I’ve got to have Adult Acne then I need a way to control it.
Cant live without Burt’s Bees Lip Balm. I have one in every coat pocket, one in my purse and one at work…just in case I lose one. If I ever happen to be without, its my worst day ever. I always have somewhat dry lips and its the only lip balm that doesn’t wear out and I love that its minty. Some people are obsessed with hand washing, I’m obsessed with lip moisture.
It’s a tie between my origins cleanser and my bedhead shampoo. But the reason is the same, as you cut corners the products you use get cheaper, and thus are filled with all kinds of things, so you need something of quality to truly get you clean.
I can not live without all my dermalogica products; all of their face cleaners and masks are amazing and keep my skin looking ravishing. I also cant live without my false lashes… but they get pricey and I definitely need to cut back. I would love to try more origins products though!
On my budget, Origins would be a welcome luxury – but no matter how much I’m making, I have to invest in a good moisturizer. If I don’t use it, my skin look as sallow and lifeless as a hangover day!
I’ve mixed it up over the years but have currently been faithful to Estee Lauder Hydra Bright, which evens out my skin tone – it’s light and gives that dewy Adriana Lima look!
I am a mom of one, and soon to be two, and even when I’m budgeting for …. life… I cannot live without have a nice day supercharged day cream with spf 15, by origins, of course =)
I am a moisture freak. I cannot live without moisturizer… the one i tend to use most is Neutragena with spf 45-70 (super protect) to protect my face from aging and harsh UV.
BABY POWDER! Cheap, regular generic brand baby powder. I brush it on to absorb oils in my hair, and dust it on my oily skin. I have very long hair, so with the baby powder at my roots I can go 4 or 5 days without washing my hair…which leaves my roots healthy and saves on shampoo and conditioner too: ) I bet you could also use it in place of deodorant, but I’ve yet to try that one.
Even though there is a recession, I refuse to let my beauty schedule suffer!
I couldn’t give up my Origins Ginger Essence perfume and body whip, nor could I give up my MAC Fluidline liner or my Stila lip glazes. My beauty items are my one true luxury that I like to treat myself to.
Thanks!!!
Hi Kat. As the only first guy to comment here so far, I thought I would share my most important skin care product, constant to both men and women. I am referring to our daily defense to the sun, spf sunscreen(I choose Origins Out Smart, personally). I have fair skin, and I’ve found this product to be both soothing and easily applicable.
When I was 17, I went on a vacation to Abaco, Bahamas for spring break. Unbenowst to me, Abaco was set to have the highest temperatures of the year that week. Well, I choose to put on a weak spf 15 suncreen, went outside and forgot about it the rest of the day. Through swimming, snorkeling, and going on local tours, I thought my skin would hold up fine. This was a mistake ;( . Upon returning to our rental house, my nose was as pink as a grapefruit, and to this day, it is more red than normal, unfortunately. The lesson I learned that day was to carefully choose a product that is covering of a wide spectrum of rays(UVA, UVB, etc.). Since my skin is naturally pretty sensitive, I needed something to cool my skin upon contact, and Origins Out Smart does the job. Since then, I’ve been hooked to this suncreen, and it continues to work like magic. Unfortunately, I have not been able to try any other Origins products, though I would love to.(a college budget will do that to you haha).
So why sunscreen? Thats easy – the sun is always there to greet you!
Thanks for reading
the one product that i would not give up is my eyelash curler! i’ve found that it is the single most effective (and least expensive) way to give the face a ‘boost’ even when other facial aspects might be.. erm, lacking.
first off, my skin is not great- oily, uneven tone, occasional breakouts, enlarged pores, etc (which i blame on genetics more than anything else)- and i have found that i really have no control over what my skin looks like. i have tried many products and while they have improved my skin, none have really made my skin as nice as i would like it to be. thankfully foundation exists which can make my sad skin look pretty good, but it can be pricey and also very time consuming! as i’m often short on time, i opt to go makeupless quite often (yikes). however, if i curl my lashes it really brightens up my face, takes some focus off my skin, and keeps me looking alert and a little more ‘made up’.
i love origins products and as a consumer that buys primarily vegan cosmetics origins is a huuuuge lifesaver. their products are amazingly effective and also smell great! my favorite are their lipsticks which have great shades, a lot of nice pale colors which are tough to find. origins also has great tools (i use their blush and foundation brushes), but i don’t think they have an eyelash curler (?) and would love to see them put one out!
Powder, it is my go to coverup for red blothcy cheeks etc.
I couldn’t live without my facial mositruizer!
for me, its shampoo and conditioner! I always have to try the next “best” combo! i can’t buy drugstore brand for some reason? the good stuff just makes SUCH a difference in my hair!
personally, my mint julep mask is a must have! my skins feels so very soothed after i wash it off,so i use it every day. it also works pretty well in shrinking my pores, as they’ve indeed grown over the years, sadly. I like Queen Helenas specifically(of the drugstore variety), its very affordable. Also, its very natural, much like Origins products, which is why Im interested in the giveaway you are having. Im a mom of five, so I dont need any of the added stress of chemicals on my face.
i dont have any real personal stories regarding it, but i do love scaring my younger ones with the green mask!
