Hollywood Assistant Files: The Job Interview

hollywood-interview-tips-lg

Job interviews are like first dates. You wear your most flattering-yet-professional outfit, try to seem interesting and brilliant, and hope the other person likes you. Except – the other person doesn’t really care if you like them! It’s totally unfair.

I’ve gone on several now, and I’m not sure if I’m really getting any better. When it comes to being an assistant, the personality match is really important. Sometimes you just don’t click with people. I think everyone assumes that you are capable of doing the job – the interview is often a test to see if they’ll WANT to work with you, not if you can handle it.

I think I’ve learned some valuable interview tips, though:

1) Do your research. Look up the interviewer’s credits/projects/etc. on StudioSystem, IMDB Pro, etc. Everyone loves to be congratulated on their successes. If you really do like what they’ve done, even better. Still, don’t seem like a drooling Zac Efron fan – be professional.

2) Have a few copies of your resume handy, even though you had to send one in to be considered.

3) Have a few questions of your own prepared. Some interviewers will do a lot of talking (and sometimes that’s better), but others will just sit there and expect you to impress them. Try to make your interview last long enough so they get a good sense of your personality. Be memorable.

4) Follow up with at least a thank you email, if not a handwritten card.

5) Don’t be afraid to ask a reference to make a call or e-mail on your behalf. Hollywood runs on recommendations, and one conversation with someone who sings your praises can get you the interview or the job itself. And if you truly have impressed your reference, he or she will most likely be very happy to help you.

Remember that Hollywood has always been very competitive, and that it’s gotten worse with the economy. Fewer jobs are available for even more people looking for them. If you don’t get a job, it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. It’s possible that there was just another candidate (or several) with more experience or a personal connection. Don’t stress about what you can’t control – take advantage of what you can!

  1. these are all very good recommendations – from someone who just went through this process – but I’d also add: be sure to be on time, even early! also, make sure you dress appropriate and you look your best. that means looking, sharp, smart, and professional.

  2. And if all else fails, don’t forget to employ the more traditional casting couch methods of getting a job in Hollywood.

  3. Hello administrator, I’ve a little bit request. I had been just googleing for some data on the subject you revealed and found this post. Some really nice material you posted right here.
