The most recent issue of Rolling Stone magazine – out on stands tomorrow – features American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert looking his best on the cover, but that’s not all. In an exclusive interview, Lambert officially comes out of the closet, announcing to the world that he is gay and that he’s “proud of [his] sexuality.” The interview also features Lambert’s views on his recent drag pictures, what he really thought of Idol winner Kris Allen, his plans for the future and much, much more.
While admitting to being gay, the 27-year-old doesn’t see himself as a leader in the gay rights movement. On the topic he says, “I’m trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader,” and later he remarked, “who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing. It shouldn’t matter. Except it does. It’s really confusing.”
As to his former “competition” Kris Allen, Lambert had this to say, “They put me with the cute guy. Distracting! He’s the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean he’s open-minded and liberal, but he’s definitely 100% straight.”
Now, this isn’t exactly surprising news, as Lambert himself admits, especially as there have been numerous pictures floating around the internet of Lambert with other men. First there were the Burning Man pictures that featured Lambert in drag making out with another man and then more recently a picture of Lambert leaving an LA gay club, holding hands with another guy (Drake LaBry). Still, it’s good to be clear on these issues, as ambiguity can be confusing. Plus, it’s always great to have another gay man out and open.
As to Lambert’s plans for the future? Nothing certain, but maybe a gig as the lead singer of Queen? Sounds good to me.
