Facebook Presents: Vanity URLs

For those of you who can’t get enough of Facebook as is (i.e. me), the popular social media company has just introduced a brand new feature that will go into effect later this week. That new and exciting feature? Vanity URLs. Yep, much like your typical vanity plates, except digital and probably not as lame either (jokes).

So instead of having – for example – http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=695564832&ref=profile at the top of your browser bar you will now be able to customize it however you want, like so: http://www.facebook.com/jessicamadisonrox – or something.

But of course there are some rules and regulations. After all, how are you supposed to please everyone when only one URL can be given to each person, especially for those with common names, famous names, or those looking for “funny” names like lolcats, etc.? So to help solve this dilemma, Facebook is dealing out URLs on a first come, first serve basis starting on Saturday night at 12:01 AM Eastern Time, which gives you until the end of the week to come up with the perfect Facebook name. But keep in mind, this will likely be the largest digital land rush in internet history, so plan ahead and make sure you have a good internet connection come Friday night.

Also, before you change it to something like jonasbrothers4lyfe, you should know that these – as for now – are permanent. That is, you only get one shot, so choose wisely. Also important, the URL can only contain the following characters: A-Z, 0-9 and “.” (a period).

As to how to set one of these up? Facebook will be sending out a notice with the necessary instructions.
