Stephen Colbert reports from Iraq

colbert-1

Normally I don’t have that much in common with 16 year-old boys, but Mr. Stephen Colbert is the sure exception. I love his ties, his narcissism and even those goofy uneven ears. This week he’s broadcasting The Colbert Report from Iraq, and I’m frickin’ stoked.

Over the past few months, Colbert had kept his exact location in the Persian Gulf a secret, giving us only a Carmen Sandiego-style game board of educational clues (nowww I know why that show was on PBS!). Last night’s show started off with a fun video of Colbert himself being tranquilized and transported across the globe without knowing the destination…and if I hadn’t been streaming from his website that was patriotically plastered with the word IRAQ, it would have been a much more suspenseful cold open.

Donning a full camouflage suit (and I’m talking tie and sport coat, not cargo pants) and wielding a golf club, Colbert greeted the enthusiastic crowd of excited servicemen and women by saying “Yes, I feel the same way about me. What an honor it is for you to have me here.”

Colbert called Iraq “the country so nice we invaded it twice,” and had plenty to poke fun at, including a lack of alcohol, and heat that would make Sadaam Hussein “ask for a blanket” in hell.  After the brief monologue he moved onto the show’s usual features such as The Word, but kept the show focused on Iraq, paying special attention to his audience.

The week promises guests from the armed forces as well as second segment of “Stephen Strong: Army of Me,” a video of Colbert’s trip to Fort Knox for basic training (in the first installment, he arrived via limo, wore a red tracksuit and carried Louis Vuitton luggage).

Colbert is extending his discussions about Iraq even further this week as a Guest Editor for Newsweek magazine.
