I can’t tell you how happy I am that sequins are back in style. For me, they never really went out of style. But I know for most, the glittery little jewels are most commonly associated with the gaudy cocktail dresses of the ’80s. Not a fond fashion memory.
While pricey sequined frocks are front and center on all the hottest runways, and celebrities are stepping out on red carpets everywhere in sparkly numbers, even the most cash-strapped gal can rock this trend. It’s actually the perfect recession trend, because vintage stores are filled with great sequined finds. I know…you’re thinking about those cocktail dresses again, aren’t you?
Yes, if you decide to hunt down the perfect sequined item in a second-hand store, you will most definitely come across sad castoffs that look like they’re straight from an episode of Dynasty. But you have to keep digging until you find the right piece to fit into your wardrobe. Someone Else’s, an amazing vintage store in North Hollywood is full of great sequined tops and dresses. Personally, I have my eye on a long peacock-colored sequined jacket from the store!
If the idea of buying something completely blanketed in sequins is frightening (you fear you’ll look like a giant disco ball, don’t you?), go with a simple cardigan that has sequined embellishments at the collar or on the sleeves. It’s a nice way to ease into the trend for those of you who are glitter-shy.
Contemporary designers like Alice + Olivia and Betsey Johnson have been known to work a lot with sequins. And the always-hip Urban Outfitters will most likely have a few sequined duds to choose from.
Honestly, I can’t say enough about the little sparkles. They make getting ready to go out at night easy. Jeans, tank top, shoes, sequined jacket. Done. No accessories needed. You’re already wearing the sparkle!
