2009 CFDA Nominees Announced

'The Model As Muse' MET Costume Gala 2009

It was a good year for fashion design! The Council of Fashion Designers of America recently announced the nominees for their annual awards – the winners of which will be crowned tonight! - and the list has turned out to be a who’s who of youthful innovation and lasting success, in the often brutal fashion industry.

At first it seems unfair that Marc Jacobs is nominated in two categories, as well as being honored for his work at Louis Vuitton, but he’s got some stiff competition. Especially for Womenswear Designer of the Year. Under any other circumstances, I would simply hand him the award. But this year he’s up against Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte and Narcisco Rodriguez.

As hard as this is to say, I am rooting for the Mulleavy sisters. They came out of the gate strong after launching their line in 2005 and they haven’t stopped since. Their designs are instantly recognizable and impeccably crafted. Not to mention unbelievably ingenious. Hollywood A-listers from Reese Witherspoon to Kiera Knightley have walked the red carpet in Rodarte designs. My personal favorite was Knightley’s dress from the Atonement premiere.

In the Menswear category, I am rooting for Scott Sternberg, the bookish designer behind the indie-prep line Band of Outsiders.

IT boys Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler and designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, are also amongst the nominees. Along with legendary bridal designer (and so much more) Vera Wang.

Anna Sui, the quirky business-savvy designer who continually comes out with clothes that every girl wants to wear, is honored with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.

Congrats to all the nominees and honorees. The kudos are much deserved and I wait with bated breath to see who comes out on top of the fashion heap! I can’t wait to see who wins!
