Calvin Klein Billboard – Too Sexy?

A new Calvin Klein billboard found in the trendy Manhattan neighborhood of SoHo is proving controversial as it depicts, what appears to be, a young teenage girl involved in a threesome (with foursome potential). The large advertisement, located at the intersection of Houston and Lafayette, features the young girl topless and with jean shorts unzipped, laying atop a shirtless male while simultaneously making out with a second shirtless male. The scene, which takes place on a sofa, also features a third half undressed male who appears to be watching.
Asked their intention by the New York Daily News, Calvin Klein reported that the “intention was to create a very sexy campaign that speaks to our targeted demographic.” Which of course begs the question – just who exactly is Calvin Klein’s targeted demographic? And if they can’t be found in Manhattan, where can they be found?
These of course are rhetorical questions, as the answer is as plain as it is crude: sex sells. And few know it better than Calvin Klein. Not new to the block of sexually-charged and controversial advertisements, Calvin Klein previously made headlines when they featured a then 15-year-old Brooke Shields acting suggestively in a TV commercial from 1979. Then again, more recently, with a young and coked out Kate Moss. In fact, Calvin Klein has always skirted controversy and scandal. And yet, they’ve always found success.
And judging by today’s big headlines, it looks like they’ll find their success once more.
