Go Vegetarian or Not?

To veg or not, that is the question.

I've been on both sides of the equation, even having dabbled in veganism for a period of three months. Currently, I do eat meat, although I do so very sparingly. I would love to go 100% vegetarian but I don’t feel like it is conducive to my current lifestyle. I fully believe that while vegetarianism is a very healthy option, I don’t believe it is right for everyone. Each of our bodies are different and require different things to “tick”.

These days, I think of myself as more of a “flexitarian” or a “semi-vegetarian” because I try to eat vegetarian meals 80-90% of the time, allocating a 10% reserve for special meals with my family and boyfriend or the seafood that I love. I used to have more of an “all or nothing” approach to eating and, when I was a vegetarian, I would be very hard on myself. Now, I have come to the understanding that it really doesn’t matter. Even if you eat just one plant based meal a day you are doing yourself, your environment and your fellow animals a big favor. Its not a race or competition to see who can win the “best vegetarian award” – its a personal lifestyle choice.

Some benefits of the semi-vegetarian lifestyle include:

  • Reducing chances of heart disease. Eating less meat means eating less artery clogging saturated fat.
  • Reducing chances for colon cancer
  • Helping the environment
  • Increasing your energy levels

  1. lol, what a shit article. grow some balls and get off the fence. i doubt all meat eaters eat meat for 100% of their meals. yeah there is a health issue but what about factory farms, they are cruel. even if you don’t care about animals this article is pointless. you should be fired for wasting time

  2. Im confused- what’s the point of this? Is this supposed to teach me something? Or are you just blabbing about yourself for no reason? How self indulgent

  3. Jenna was just giving her opinion and her own experience with vegetarianism. Nothing wrong with that.

  4. Thomas Scott says:

I think it’s great that you’re doing your best to make choices you feel are healthy, and I agree that you ARE definitely helping the environment!

Personally, I feel the key to achieving greater health is taking it one step at a time, and feeling good about the process. Sounds like you’re doing that! Good job :)

    All the best!

  5. Yeah, not sure what’s wrong with cutting down on meat instead of simply cutting it out of your diet altogether. Sure, going vegetarian will be better for the environment and for animals, but it’s not always good for the person. But, at the same time, just because you can’t go vegetarian doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try and limit the amount of meat you eat either.

And that’s the point I think she was trying to make. And one that I happen to agree with. So good post Jenna!

  6. I agree Kate… I’m very anemic, but turn out all the preservatives etc in meat left me more tired…. so instead i’m a ‘fake-atarian’ (what my friends call me), but really a pescatarian… Seafood gives me all the protein and I take iron supplements and i’m super healthy compared to before….
