This is the saddest thing i've heard. How can anyone be so cruel? She should've dropped her at my house i'll be more than happy to adopt this little girl. This world carries some sick people. May god protect this little baby.

Robin...
Really? A little education.. a tragedy like this and you are talking about educating over some simple comment. First of all...this is why I said women should be screened before they are allowed to get pregnant. Oh ya... great she did not expose the baby to the elements....SHE PUT IT IN A BOX...even better.HOW CAN YOU JUSTIFY THIS??? This is sad and wrong. There is no excuse for it. There is help out there for women that need it. I am disgusted by this. I wish well for this little girl.. and will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

How would you like to try and survive a day or two without food or water. Smarten up.

Jessica Madison shouldn't be allowed to print anything if she comes across as this witless. I want to believe she was feigning ignorance for some sort of literary effect, but regardless of her intentions, this writer sounds like a moron.

Don't they have to be in an incubator for a day? Clearly in the absence of having a child you've made no special efforts to understand the difficulties associated with being a mother, let alone how they come into the world.

I think at the very least perspective should be called on to at leasr realize what a miracle it is that this baby was not aborted, murdered or kept by this mother who was not fit to raise a child.

People assume she was in her right mind... she was in enough of it to clothe her baby and provide it with a blanket. Not everyone would know about an open door policy. I choose to think she tried to do the right thing here. It could have been far worse - people do kill their babies ya know! Sadly, this mother may not seek medical care if she is having issues because they will ask her where her baby is and be on the lookout for a new mom sans baby.

It doesn't matter what her situation was or her reasons for doing this. She was wrong. Hospitals have an open-door policy about these things. If you don't want your baby, take it to the nearest hospital and they will take it in, no questions asked. To put that helpless infant in a shoebox shows cowardice and shame and I hope the mother doesn't get a good night's rest until she confesses.

"Don't they have to be in the incubator for at least a day?" Maybe a little education is in order here.

No. The only babies that are incubators are those that are premature or in some way having difficulty with body functions after birth. The great majority of babies are absolutely fine with no medical intervention in the least.

And as for how "careless" and "selfish" an act this was...careless and selfish would have been to put the baby somewhere where it would not be found, exposed to the elements, without clothing or heat or otherwise physically at risk.

It is astounding to me how quick we are to condemn people without knowing anything about their lives or the pressures that led them to do something that most of us (probably including them) find unthinkable.

Sure. She made some choices you wouldn't have made. But she put a nice warm hat and clothing on the baby. She kept her protected from the rain. She put her somewhere warm where she would be found, and probably very quickly. She took good enough care of herself during pregnancy to deliver a healthy child (more than can be said for a lot of people, including those those who do keep their children). She tied off the umbilical cord appropriately, so that there would not be bleeding.

Leave her be. Yes. Bad things might have happened. But they didn't. There is a healthy newborn. There are people wanting healthy newborns. There is a mom who did the best she could do, under unknown circumstances. Leave her be.
