’30 Rock’ and ‘Mad Men’ Lead the Emmy Nomination Pack

Two shows that couldn’t be more different if they tried, but share a common link, lead the way as the Emmy nominations were announced this morning.

NBC’s “30 Rock” sat atop the field with 22 nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series and AMC’s “Mad Men” was second with 16 nominations including Outstanding Drama Series. Each show won that respective award last year.

While “30 Rock” is a half hour comedy starring Tina Fey about the production of a sketch comedy show and “Mad Men” is an hour long drama about advertising men on Madison Avenue in the 50′s and 60′s, the star of the latter, Jon Hamm, was nominated for his role on the former in the “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series” category.

“Mad Men” will have to defeat HBO’s “Big Love,” AMC’s “Breaking Bad,’ FX’s “Damages,’ Showtime’s “Dexter,” FOX’s “House” and ABC’s “Lost” to repeat in the Outstanding Drama Series category this year. (And it’s pretty cool that almost all different networks, and mostly cable ones at that, were nominated.)

In the Outstanding Comedy Series category, “30 Rock” will be up against HBO’s “Entourage,” FOX’s “Family Guy,” HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords,” CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother,” NBC’s “The Office” and Showtime’s “Weeds.”

The 61st annual Emmy Awards will be held on September 20 from the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

  1. I’d say the two shows are pretty similar in that they both have pitch-perfect writing and are very smart. Plus, I love ‘em both!
