Sorry, But Every Guy is a Geek at Heart

Editor’s Note:  You may recognize Germain Lussier from his daily posts on what’s going on in the world of news, current events, gossip, and entertainment.  He’s written about all things Movie, TV, and Video game-related for publications such as Premiere Magazine and Entertainment Weekly.  Well, that doesn’t mean that the guy doesn’t have thoughts about male-female relationships and will, on occasion, be writing posts that give us a glimpse into the mind of a dude.  So, without further ado…

At our cores, all guys are huge geeks.

Not all for the same thing, but all of us get really excited over something that most girls find really stupid and possibly unattractive. Maybe it’s hunting, maybe it’s football, maybe it’s cars or maybe, in my case, it’s pop culture, but all of us are unnaturally infatuated with something.

That makes every single boy in the world a fanboy of something. Some of us just hide it better or flat out deny it for one simple reason. YOU. Yes, it’s because of the female species that the straight, attractive guy in the three piece suit, driving a Maserati is scared to show you his iPod full of top 40 and show tunes or that the cute guy you met at the bar will never admit to having seen “Star Wars” 400 times.

And we don’t blame you. We don’t. It’s completely understandable that our obsessions aren’t exactly charming. But it’s what makes us who we are and we only ask that, when our deepest, darkest secrets (yes, that’s what we consider these things) do come to light, you don’t immediately shut us out. Why should we be embarrassed that we paint our face blue every Sunday for a football game, have cried during “Lord of the Rings” or love sitting in a stinking, dirty boat for hours on end with a small line in the water?

That’s how we know when we find a really great girl. When she not only puts up with our huge fanboy tendencies, but tries to get into it with us.

My vice, like I said earlier, is pop culture. I’m the traditional definition of geek. I read comic books, have hundreds of DVDs, own all the video game systems and have posters of “Star Wars” in my room. I’m not only going to San Diego Comic Con this year, but I’ve been every year for about half a decade. However if you just saw me on the street, you probably couldn’t guess any of those things. And that’s by very specific design because I feel these aren’t things that most women find appealing. Most women wouldn’t want to go to the movies every single Friday night so they don’t fall behind on the latest releases. But really, should the fact that I own a replica of a lightsaber be a deal breaker?

Think about about what guys have to put up with you. We have to convince you that you always look beautiful. We have to reassure you that yes, we love you. We have to constantly be scared of talking or looking at other girls because you are crazy jealous and we have to wait around for hours, all ready to go, while you straighten out your makeup. (Of course, these aren’t truths for every girl, but certainly most of you can relate to at least one example). And I’m not saying that these things are in anyway a major chore or that you aren’t right in expecting them. I’m just saying if you expect us to do things, we should expect you to do things too.

Things like don’t get turned off when the guy takes you home and you find a shelf full of collectible toys or has football themed toilet paper.

When men are alone, these are the things we talk about. We talk about our stupid, pointless hobbies and obsessions. We brag about the lengths we go to to secure a pair of tickets, get a great seat in a movie theater or how it was because we didn’t change our underwear that the Steelers won the Super Bowl. Of course, we talk about girls too, but we honestly feel like these things define us. It’s not our bank account or car that makes us individuals, it’s our over the top fandom of something you probably hate.

So ladies, try and be cool to all the dorks in your life. Because you are going to end up with one. Guaranteed.
