Yes, we are in a recession. Unemployment is up and spending is down. But if you’ve got a little extra cash, now is a good time to take advantage of retailers’ desperation….and amazing sales!
I’m not advocating fiscal irresponsibility. After all, that’s how our economy got into this mess. But let me just give you a little rundown on where to find some good bargains.

Now is a good time to check out your favorite stores that are normally a little too pricey to afford. Big upscale chains like J.Crew, Anthropologie and Banana Republic have truly amazing bargains on quality clothes. The merchandise at these stores usually has high price points. With the economy being the way it is, people aren’t willing to throw away $300 on a dress. So, that dress gets marked down. And you can end up snagging an amazing item for one-third its original price. Sometimes more!

J.Crew is a personal favorite of mine. Not only do they have discounts-on-top-of-discounts on their sale items, but they also offer discounts on new merchandise.

It’s also a good time to check out small boutiques. Because their business can be hit the hardest by a down economy, they might be more likely to offer big discounts to keep customers coming back. A favorite boutique of mine, that offers excellent deals and excellent service recession or not, is The Elegant Mess, on Fairfax near Melrose. The store offers a hip mix of name brands and indie designers, and everything from jewelry to clothes and shoes.

So, go out there. Shop. But, be smart and find the good bargains.
