Drew Barrymore is not only stepping behind the camera, she’s lacing up her roller skates as well, as she’s producing, directing and acting in a new film titled “Whip It!”. The first trailer of which came out this weekend with the premier of “(500) Days of Summer.”
In the film, Ellen Page (“Juno”) plays Bliss, a rebellious young girl who feels totally out of place in the world until she discovers female roller derby. Based on a novel called “Derby Girl” by Shauna Cross, the film also features Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern, Kristin Wiig, Juliette Lewis, rapper Eve and even Barrymore herself.
From the trailer, it seems like Barrymore has found a film to direct that almost is too perfect for her. There seems to be a good mix of awkward teenage stuff, sports action and then plenty of coming of age in a world that is, at first, totally alien. The only difference is that Barrymore came up as an actor and Ellen Page’s character competes in roller derby.
It’s pretty incredible, though, to think that the former star of “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial,” “Charlie’s Angels” and “Never Been Kissed” is now behind the camera.
“Whip It!” is scheduled for release October 9. Check out the trailer below:

In theory you'd think roller derby to be the ultimate sport. Hot, sexy-looking girls roughin' it up on skates. However, in the real world, this is never the case. I'm not entirely sure why, but roller derby seems to attract the ugliest man-looking-like girls ever. Some even have hair! On their face! That is why a movie like this is such a god-send. Here we have actually attractive girls playing rough house. How great! And who knows, maybe after watching this movie, other attractive girls will be, uh, attracted to the sport! That's what I like to call a win-win-win situation.
