Updating a story we did yesterday, it seems Sony has purchased the rights to the footage of Michael Jackson’s final tour rehearsals and will release it in theaters.
The cost? $60 million. The release date? The day before Halloween, Oct. 30, 2009.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the story late Tuesday that Sony had purchased the footage, reportedly 80 hours chronicling Michael Jackson rehearsing for the comeback tour that would never be, “This Is It.”
The only other film scheduled for major release that weekend is “The Box,” which stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden. That’s because, notoriously, Halloween weekend is a poor one when it comes to box office as most of us are either trick or treating, taking our kids trick or treating, or drinking our faces off. However, the Jackson film might just fit in with that party mentality and end up successful. Who knows?
The $60 million dollars paid for the footage is being split between the Jackson estate and AEG Live. Ninety percent of it will go to the estate (which, as per Jackson’s will, is his kids, mother and eventually a charity) while 10% of it will go to AEG, which was putting on the concerts.
Would you pay to see Michael Jackson’s final concert in a movie theater? Leave comments and let us know because it’s a $60 million dollar gamble.

Personally? Probably not. You know, I'd rather be dancing and partying to MJ on Halloween then sitting in a theater and watching MJ. That said, I would like to see the footage eventually. I got to imagine he still had some of his moves.
