Now this is a law we can get behind. And savor and devour and get all over our fingers

Beginning this week, Mars Candy is offering a quarter million people per week a free piece of chocolate just by going to the website www.realchocolate.com. You go to that Web site every Friday through October, beginning July 31, and put in your e-mail address. Then, 250,00 people will be sent a certificate to get some free M&M’S, SNICKERS, TWIX, 3 MUSKETEERS, MILKY WAY or DOVE.

Why are they doing this? Well, everyone loves chocolate, of course. Also, the site says, simply, “Times are tough and we at Mars want to help.”

They also brag that their products are “real chocolate” by the standards of U.S. Standards of Identity. These are government regulations that say specifically what makes something that something. In the case of chocolate it says “that cocoa butter be the only source of fat (except for milk fat). There are several other requirements too, such as a specific amount of chocolate liquor, use of flavorings and sugar substitutes” according to the site.

It then goes on to show you other chocolate products that don’t live up to this standard, which actually doesn’t make them chocolate at all, according to the law.

And finally, the Mars Web site gives everyone a chance to vote for a town in American to get free chocolate. Everyone can vote on the site for the chance that their city would get a “Free Chocolate Day Event” featuring up to 50,000 pieces of chocolate. Right now Chicago, IL is in the lead followed by New York, NY and then Houston, TX.
