A Texas woman decapitated her baby and ate pieces of her body after claiming she “heard voices” early Monday morning. Authorities found the woman with a self-inflicted stab wound lying on the floor of her home, bleeding, with her baby in her arms.
33-year-old Otty Sanchez is currently in the hospital and has been charged with capital murder. It is unclear, though, what exactly the motive was behind the baby’s killing, but authorities did mention Sanchez had split with her baby’s father only a week earlier.
I’ve heard a lot of crazy stories in my time as a journalist, but this definitely has to be one of the worst. I can’t imagine what could be going through this woman’s mind as she decapitates her baby. This is just beyond disgusting.

I'm really disgusted and sad for that poor little baby more than anything, but I'm pretty damn sure that were gonna find this sick woman was withdrawing from some medication. If your taking something, you can't' just go off it cold turkey, you need to taper off it slowly, or else stuff like this happens. I don't know why she stopped taking them, but the media needs to stop leaving everybody in mystery believing that people like her and Andrea Yates just become this way out of the blue, withdrawals make people go off the deep end, like heroin addicts and cocaine addicts, but this is even worse, with antipsychotics, drugs make you lose that feeling of empathy.

Unreal. I can't even begin to imagine what is going through someone's mind, while they are decapitating their infant and then eating it. It's just sick......don't give this pycho treatment or counseling, because this one needs to be put down for good.

The woman was diagnosed with Postpartum Psychosis. Google it. It is very, very serious. She was and is still very, very ill. 10% of women diagnosed with it kill themelves or their baby or both. Whoever left that child in her care, knowing her mental state should be charged with child neglect/endangerment. I'd say there is a very good chance daddy dropped the ball here in a lot bigger way than it might initially appear.

It never ceases to amaze me the excuses people come up with to attempt to explain away their idiocy. "I have an addiction", "The devil made me do it", "I hear voices", "I have a mental disorder"...and so on and so forth. The list is almost endless and still grows every day. There is no way in this world that anyone could feasibly believe that eating a baby is excusable in any way, shape, or form. I don't care how severe your supposed "mental disorder" is; every human being is born with a conscience. To feed into this monster's excuses simply adds fuel to the fires of other useless people out there who can't wait to commit some horrid act and then conveniently blame it on someone or something else. This horrible woman should be executed publicly and so should a hell of a lot of other people who claim they are "insane" and are sitting in their prison cells laughing at the people who believe them.

I think this is the sickest thing to do to a poor innocent child. I think that women should have done to her excactly what she has done to her baby. I hope she a gets a punishment to the fullest extent. It just scares me that there are really people like this in the world.

This is the craziest thing I have ever heard and I really pray that she doesn't manage to cop an insanity plea. I'm so tired of the "I'm crazy" excuse. If she had multiple personalities, tell her to pick which one she wants to receive the lethal injection. If she hears voices, tell her to talk to the one that will comfort her as the switch gets flipped on the electric chair. I don't think anyone will argue that the world will be a better place without this psycho baby-killer.

How horrible this must be for the father, knowing that they tried to get the cops to do something and they turned a blind eye to what was happening. Maybe this baby could have been saved. I hope the 911 responder realizes his mistake and has a hard time sleeping.

And I still don't buy the ridiculous excuses people use to explain away their mistakes. No demon from hell forced that woman to eat her child; she did it on her own, the same way people use drugs on their own, cheat on their spouses on their own, steal on their own, and so on and so forth. To say that this worthless woman is suffering from psychological problems is like saying that Michael Vick is really a good person at heart and just made one tiny little mistake.

It's stories like this that bring the truth about the America Mental Health Care System into true light. There is such a stigma in the US regarding MH. Look at the veterans for god sake. People who have put their lives on the line and now suffer from diseases of the mind because of the things they have seen. Who is there for them. Who was there for this women. Inexcusable yes her crime was but why are we so fast to condemn and not to push for better health care. Maybe the focus should be on how we can help people like this women so things like this don't happen and not just sit around and wait speak your disgust and do absolutly nothing to change the pattern. How many children have to die like this before people realize that help is needed. Everyone so quick to judge and so slow to do anything.

After reading through many posts, I cannot believe anyone would defend this woman or ANY woman who could harm their own child. This is not about our Mental Health Care System, this is about our Judicial System allowing these people to get off time and time again. While everyone is calling each other ignorant and education yourself on psychology classes -- how about we look at the statistics of this happening in other countries -- it is rare. And why you're education yourself, let's not forgot about the VICTIM, the poor little sweet baby. OF COURSE ANY MOTHER WHO HARMS THEIR CHILD IS A MENTAL CASE -- It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that. The insanity plea is BS -- when these heinous crimes are committed of course something mentally is wrong -- WHERE IS OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM -- Why is my tax paying money being wasted to give these people defenses and trials when there is no question that she did it!!! EYE FOR AN EYE!!! I'm tired of the Mental Health Care System Failed, The Husband dropped the ball, etc. WHERE IS PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY!!!! I can't believe the family didn't get charged with enabling. They knew she had severe mental problems and still let this woman be alone with the infant. Even the infants father allowed the child to be in her care although she had previously slung the carseat with him in it into her car and sped off after an argument. Someone should have stepped in! In one article it was stated that she had been to the hospital that very same day because she had heard voices! Don't get me wrong, I still think Sanchez herself should be punished, but aren't the people who were around her just as guilty? I mean there are people in prison right now on the basis of "they should have known" and these people KNEW and they face no consequences.

I agree, Sarah M. Post partum psychosis is extremely serious and frightening.It involves a number of symptoms, such as hallucinations and hearing voices. Some of the new mothers have never had any kind of episode before giving birth. They believe it might be caused by some kind of hormonal disorder. In one article, a woman described feeling like she was floating above herself and watching herself give birth. In the weeks following, she knew something was very wrong with her and turned herself in for psychiatric care after she was watching a television commercial with some guy dropping water melons on the sidewalk and she realized she was envisioning doing the same thing to her baby's head. HOWEVER, that wasn't the case in this situation. What the hell was her idiot family thinking? She was already diagnosed with schizophrenia and she'd had one psychotic episode preceding the nine-one-one call. SHE WAS ALREADY CRAZY! Didn't the doctors think that she was already high risk and it might be a good idea to have her under observation before they hand a helpless baby over to her. This woman should never have been allowed to keep the child. Her family should have intervened and had her hospitalized immediately. Apparently, the doctors monitor the mother and put her on all kinds of medicines and recovery is possible. However, if the mother decides to have another child, then her chances of getting sick again go up by fifty percent. Either way, she needs to be locked up.
