Twitter was way under the radar when teen noir Veronica Mars was cancelled, but it may just be the way for the series to live on – up on the silver screen. Kristen Bell, who played the show’s sassy heroine, recently twittered about her disappointment with Warner Brothers’ “lack of enthusiasm” for a Veronica Mars movie. Though she and creator Rob Thomas have expressed interest, Bell urged fans to help convince the studio that people would indeed see the movie.

It sounds like a difficult feat, but fan pressure has been influential in the past. After Roswell fans inundated Warner Brothers TV with Tobasco sauce (fave of the show’s teenage alien characters) in 2000, the show was brought back for a second season.  In 2006, CBS ordered seven more episodes of Jericho after fans sent over 40,000 pounds of nuts to CBS. And in a more financially obvious display of fan interest, strong DVD sales and syndication numbers prompted Fox to revive Family Guy after cancelling it twice.

Unfortunately for Bell, there doesn’t seem to be an example of grassroots fan efforts motivating feature executives to go ahead with movie plans. And while Sex & The City and The Simpsons have both recently (and successfully) been adapted into films, these shows were also big hits on TV. Veronica Mars, while often critically acclaimed, struggled for ratings both on its original network UPN and on the newly-formed CW.

The one glimmer of hope could be Bell’s rising star power; since Veronica Mars ended, she’s gained attention from her roles in Heroes and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. She’ll also star alongside Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman in Couples Retreat, set to be released in October. Her twitter powers – as well as which clever object fans should send - are yet to be determined.
