When I first heard the concept of the book turned screenplay Julie and Julia, I was fascinated.
The story follows New York food blogger Julie Powell, as she writes about her daily cooking successes and failures while working her way through Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” page by page, recipe by recipe.
As a food blogger myself, I appreciated the thought that Powell could turn her love for cooking, her love for food and her love for writing into not only a wildly popular blog, but then to undertake transforming that blog into book, and now a movie starring Amy Adams and Meryl Streep.
Every blogger likes to believe that they have a unique voice and an audience that is reading not only to learn about whatever topic the blogger may be tackling, but also in appreciation of that voice and ultimately of that individual.
Food bloggers specifically have responded with mixed reviews, arguing that Adams softens Powell’s humorous, yet sometimes cranky blog voice. Others have simply praised that a movie that pays tribute to the artistry of cooking is hitting the masses.
Though I have yet to see the movie, just knowing of its’ existence inspires me to believe that a blog can turn from a personal journal into a gift to the masses, that an ordinary life can become extraordinary, and that if Juile Powell can take on Juila Child, I can aspire to more as well. Maybe I’ll never write a book, maybe I’ll never pen a screenplay, but I can try a challenging recipe and I can take a writing risk. But, just to be safe, I’ll see if Rachel McAdams is free for the big screen version. A girl can dream, right?
In the meantime, check out the trailer below:

It's really hard to picture anyone but foodies enjoying this film, I just don't think they could appreciate it as much as us food bloggers do! Rachel McAdams would TOTALLY play you in a movie! I can just see it now...Rachel sitting at the table eating a Hugh Jass Salad with hummus & BBQ. haha
