The “500 Days of Summer” Blues

Yeah, the movie 500 Days of Summer made me a little sad, but that’s not what I’m talking about when I mention the blues. I’m actually talking about the abundance of the color blue in the film.

Did anyone else notice all the blue? I mean, it was a pretty obvious styling choice. And, I’m sure, a nod to Zooey Deschanel’s big blue eyes. Go see the movie again if you missed it, every outfit Zooey wears has some blue component, whether it be a bow in her hair or a blue dress.

While the movie is a twist on a conventional romantic comedy involving two people, it’s really all about Zooey’s character, Summer, the girl of Tom’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) dreams, without really being about her. You won’t learn much about her, but you will be captivated by her. Even the dance sequence featuring Tom in post-coital bliss is a blue homage to Summer. Right down to the little cartoon bluebird.

If you have not seen the movie – shame on you – check out some stills to see what I’m talking about.

My mind could really spiral out of control thinking up all sorts of meanings behind the blue styling choice, but I will just chalk it up to a clever wardrobe decision. Or, could it possibly be symbolism for how things end between Summer and Tom?

Hmmm….it’s amazing what you can find on this here Internet. As I was nearing the end of writing this post I decided to browse the web to try and find an answer to all my questions. And, poof, here it is!

  1. Smart choice by the director as it the blue dresses and accessories really do bring out Zooey’s eyes. Makes sense.

  2. Love this movie. On my second viewing, I’m going to keep a look out for all the blue fashion items.
