Fashion is an intrinsic part of hip hop. And these days, the ladies of hip hop are turning up the heat with some of the most unique styles out there. What Missy Elliot and Mary J. Blige started, these new singers are continuing.
1. Kelis
Ever since she gave milkshakes a whole new meaning, Kelis has been on top of the hip hop world. Her style is ever changing, as is her hair, but it is always funky and sexy. While her pregnancy style was hit-or-miss, no doubt she will be back on her A-game when her new album is released.
2. M.I.A.
I’m pretty sure this girl glows in the dark. I’ve never seen her in anything other than neon, and I love it. Her style is so urban and funky and she doesn’t give a shit what other people think. This Sri Lankan badass lets her fashion and her music do the talking.
3. Ciara
When she first hit the scene a few years ago, I was not a fan of this girl’s fashion. She was all sexed-up-video- girl wearing hoochie tops and tight pants in an all too obvious sort of way. When I saw this recent picture of her, I knew she’d finally grown up and found a more individual style.
4. Estelle
Given that she’s British, I guess Estelle is the closest thing hip hop has to an actual queen. Her style is a lot more refined than most other hip hop ladies, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t take risks. Just check out some of her red carpet looks for proof.
5. Santigold
She’s a friend of M.I.A. with a style to match. She’s got a Tina Turner-meets-Missy Elliot thing going on. You’ll see her in baggy jeans and a hoodie one minute and in a tiger-print bodysuit the next. Santigold is definitely a wild card.

M.I.A. and Santogold are both British too - and neighbors as well! - so they can be queens too. :) Like your picks though. I was unsure about Ciara for a moment, but then I remembered her excellent video for "Love Sex Magic" in which she looks great.
