Product Review: Urban Decay Ink For Eyes

Does anybody remember when Urban Decay first launched? I do. My BFF and I were both working for Hot Topic at the time and I remember getting a call from her to come in and check out this new make up line that was being introduced. Well, needless to say I raced to work to play with all the new goodies. Urban Decay was what was waiting for me and was, in my opinion, a revolutionary make up line. Lipstick and Nail Polish in colors that you could only find at Halloween sold year round? Amazing! Purple nail polish with black glitter mixed in? Unheard of! Even the name Urban Decay was dark and mysterious and the lipsticks had cool names like Asphyxia (blue and glittery) and Oil Slick (black) to entice all of us rocker grrls and bois, I even remember their original tag line “Does Pink make you Puke?” Classic.
Urban Decay has revamped a little since then and has indeed added pink into their color line but their new Ink for Eyes still remains true to their rocker roots. Ink for Eyes is a cream eyeliner that comes in six different shades for a variety of different looks. The packaging is sleek and slim so it will fit in your make up bag and comes with a brush and a mirror. The brush is a good size (not to small) and comes with an angled side for really precise lines and a smudger side so you can well, smudge. The formula is creamy and goes on smoothly and color pigment is good and can be applied in a sheer wash over the eye or you can build it up and really get a colorful line. You get a little working time with this cream which means that if you make a mistake it won’t have dried immediately. I recommend a very light dusting of translucent powder in between layers to prevent creasing by the end of the day and it is easily removable without leaving raccoon eyes. I admit that I actually fell asleep with it on last night and surprisingly didn’t have a giant mess on my face and pillow this morning.
The thing that I would like to see is in the white color which isn’t actually white. It’s a clear base with glitter mixed in. The glitter flakes are a beautiful color but the glitter flakes are just a little too big. If they could make them smaller it would be as creamy as the other colors and move a little better. When it comes to the white color once you’ve placed it on the eye it’s pretty much going to stay right where it is.
That said, Ink for Eyes are a fun alternative to powder shadows and the colors are great going into Autumn and (gasp!) the holiday party season (already?). But, Urban Decay you will aways have a special place in my heart simply for the look on my mom’s face when I came out of my room wearing blue lipsick.
