Sunglass Trend Proves It’s Hip to be Round

All the cool kids wear (or have worn) round glasses. Think about it: John Lennon, Elton John, Sienna Miller, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen….Harry Potter. Round sunglasses are all the rage.

This trend is catching on like wildfire. I haven’t seen a picture of MK Olsen lately in which she is not sporting a pair of Lennon-inspired shades while strolling the streets of NYC. Come to think of it, it was the Olsen twins who I first saw wearing the half-tinted round Chanel sunglasses last year…possibly the first reincarnation of this trend. And now, the frames are all over the runways. From Proenza Schouler to Ralph Lauren, everyone is going round.

I think the style is pretty hip. It will be replaced by something even more hip in a couple months, but for now it will do. Remember the Rayban Wayfarer, last summer’s sunglasses of choice? Well, the round sunglasses trend will come and go in much the same way. Something old is being reinvented and everybody is clamoring to be a part of it.

On the bright side, thank God the frames have gotten smaller! Remember the bug-eyed look made popular by Nicole Riche. There was a girl who was in desperate need of more petite sunglasses to fit her petite head. But, just as big glasses made girls look like fashionable insects, this summer’s shades have the potential to turn us all into beady-eyed zombies. It’s a fine line.

Be careful out there, if this trend explodes, city streets everywhere may soon resemble a scene from Night of the Living Dead.

I like rounder looking eyeglasses, but I'm not sure I can hang around this round (har, har). Sorry. My point, though, is that John Lennon style glasses never looked that good. Even on him. At least the Wayfarer was a classic design. This on? Not so much. Still, as I first mentioned, rounding out the Wayfarer look seems like the better direction to go. Very sophisticated and not so trendy.
